It stretches from Punjab in the west to Assam in the east.

Total length: about 2,400 km

Width: about 150 to 300 km

This plain is spread over the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.

🏞️ Major river systems and their plains:

1. 🏔️ Indus Plain

Located in the northwestern part of India.

Rivers: Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej

Region: Punjab, Haryana, and partly Rajasthan

Key features:

Deep alluvial soil

Canal system for irrigation

Prolific cultivation of wheat and cotton

2. 🏞️ Sutlej-Ganga Doab

Region between Sutlej and Ganga rivers

Land flat and extremely fertile

Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh fall in this region

Major cultivation of sugarcane, wheat, paddy

3. 🏞️ Ganga Plain

Largest and densely populated plain of India

Tributaries along Ganga: Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi, Son

Region: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal

Key features:

Khadar (new alluvium) and Bhangar (old alluvium) Alluvial soil

Fertility is maintained by annual floods

Paddy, wheat, pulses, sugarcane are the major crops cultivated

4. 🏞️ Brahmaputra Plain

Located in the northeastern part of India

River: Brahmaputra and its tributaries: Manas, Dihang, Lohit, Tista

Region: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh

Main features:

Heavy rainfall and frequent floods

Swampy and moist land

Rice and tea cultivation

🌱 Physical Features:

1. Alluvial Soil:

Extremely fertile

Divided into Khadar (new soil) and Bhangar (old soil)

Favourable for cultivation of cereals, vegetables, oilseeds, sugarcane etc.

2. Flat Relief:

Flat and wide valleys formed by rivers

Drainage system Efficient

3. River Dynamics:

Rivers change course frequently (especially Kosi and Brahmaputra)

Floods and waterlogging problems are कॉमन

👥 Human & Economic Importance:

✅ Agriculture:

"Grain Bowl" of India

Irrigation facilities, fertile soil and favorable climate

Plenty of sugarcane, paddy, wheat, pulses, oilseeds cultivated

✅ Population:

High population density

States like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar fall in this region

✅ Industry:

Agro-based industries like sugar mills, textiles, food processing

Major area of Green Revolution

✅ Transportation:

Excellent road and rail network

Rivers are also used as water transport

⚠️ Problems:
