Iron Ore
Introduction:
Iron ore is one of India's most important mineral resources.
It is the primary raw material for steel production,
hence it is called the backbone of industrial development.
India is one of the world's leading countries in iron ore reserves and production.
Definition of Iron Ore:
A mineral from which metallic iron (Fe) can be economically extracted is called iron ore.
Major Types of Iron Ore:
Type Iron Content (%) Characteristics Color/Appearance
Hematite (60–70%) Highest quality ore, reddish red to brown
Magnetite (70–75%) Highest iron content, black with magnetic properties
Limonite (Limonite) Ore with 40–60% moisture, low quality, yellowish-brown
Siderite (Siderite) 30–40% iron carbonate, very low quality, gray or brown
Major Iron Ore Regions in India:
Iron ore deposits in India are primarily found in the Peninsular Plateau.
1. Jharkhand:
Major areas—Singhbhum, Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Palamu.
The iron ore found here is mainly of the hematite type.
"Noamundi" is India's most famous mine.
2. Odisha:
